Relations

Why Public Relations?

In a simplified sense, the why in public relations is visibility and influence.

Imagine you own a toy model shop but no one knows about you. At best, your sales will be accidental. People may only chance upon your shop through luck.

If you are a model shop with a strategy, gaining regular eyeballs in the right places (people who are likely to buy models), you maximise your chances of non-accidental sales.

Now you’ve got the eyeballs (or the platform) what can you do?

You can use the position to influence behaviour through effective messaging.

Think Aristotle.

Aristotle was using public relations, back in 340 BC, writing about- and relying upon- the art of ‘persuasion’.

He might not have been navigating a world of social media and AI but he knew that, if he couldn’t get people to listen, they weren’t going to follow him or adopt his teachings.

The Greek tragedy of that would have been that the world may never have heard of the scientific method of analysis.

Aristotle understood why it was important to have ‘good PR’.

He understood the need to build a platform and then to refine a message to influence behaviour. Once he had both platform and message, his philosophies had the optimum chance of success.

You can apply the model shop example and Aristotle to most situations in business or organisational life.

If your goal is to get more people to buy swimming shorts or if you want to get the council to adopt a 20mph speed limit in your village, you are going to need ‘good PR’.

Without the visibility and influence that Public Relations can bring, you are going to find it much, much harder to succeed.
